K-Dam by Kiyomi Dental: light-curing gingival barrier.

K-Dam by Kiyomi Dental is a light-curing composite resin barrier intended exclusively for professional use in dental clinics. Its purpose is to isolate and protect the soft tissues of the oral cavity, particularly the marginal or free gingiva and adjacent mucosa, during whitening treatments that require protection against oxidising agents. It can also be used to seal dental isolation and stabilise auxiliary components, such as clamps, during procedures involving K-Rubber dam dental dams by Kiyomi Dental.

The material is applied directly to the surface requiring protection. Its viscous consistency allows it to adapt to the gingival contour and achieve a precise seal. After light curing, it forms a solid, rigid and resistant layer that provides an impermeable physical barrier, preventing the whitening product from coming into contact with soft tissues.

The formulation contains methyl methacrylate as the base monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking agent and carbomer as a thickener to adjust viscosity. K-Dam is blue, has a specific gravity of 1.122 and features a low-viscosity yet non-flowing consistency that supports controlled dispensing and application.

Curing is performed using a dental LED curing light with an emission spectrum of 400–500 nm. The light-curing time is 10–20 seconds per area, depending on the curing light’s specifications. Once cured, the material is insoluble in water and can be removed at the end of treatment, preferably in one piece or in large sections.

    Indications

    • Protection of the marginal or free gingiva, interdental papillae and exposed oral mucosa during professional tooth whitening.
    • Isolation of gingival tissues from oxidising whitening agents, including hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide at concentrations used in clinical practice.
    • In-clinic whitening with hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of 6% or higher, or equivalent concentrations of carbamide peroxide.
    • Protection of specific areas against irritation, chemical burns or accidental contact with the active agent.
    • Whitening treatments using LED- or laser-activated systems.
    • Isolation of difficult-to-access interproximal areas, exposed papillae or areas with compromised gingival anatomy.
    • Stabilisation of auxiliary components, such as clamps, during dental isolation.
    • Sealing and prevention of moisture ingress during dental isolation procedures.

    Clinical benefits

Protection of the gingiva and oral mucosa

Once cured, K-Dam forms a physical barrier that prevents direct exposure of soft tissues to the whitening agent.

Precise placement and adaptation to the gingival contour

Its viscous, non-flowing texture allows controlled application, keeps the material in the selected area and provides continuous coverage of the surfaces requiring protection.

    Stable seal during whitening

The rigid layer formed after light curing helps isolate at-risk areas from the oxidising agents used in professional treatments.

    Rapid curing

Light curing with an LED curing light takes between 10 and 20 seconds per area. Once complete, the barrier’s rigidity, stability and continuity can be visually checked.

Easy removal at the end of treatment

The cured material can be carefully peeled away and removed, preferably in one piece or in large sections.

Greater control over the clinical procedure

Gingival isolation helps reduce the risk of irritation, chemical burns or soft tissue hypersensitivity, supporting control of the whitening treatment.

Visual identification through its blue colour

The material’s colour makes it easier to check the extent and continuity of the barrier, both during placement and throughout the procedure.

K-Dam by Kiyomi Dentalprovides temporary gingival isolation for professional tooth whitening and other indicated isolation procedures. Its ease of application, rapid curing and straightforward removal help protect soft tissues and improve treatment safety and control in the dental clinic.
