Sealing plays a fundamental role in any endodontic treatment. In this type of intervention, the success or failure depends heavily on the quality of the sealer.
However, sometimes the specialist may need to cure minor ailments in the canal before sealing it definitively.
For this reason, in today's post we are going to talk about the different types of cements and the roles they play in endodontic treatment procedures.
1. Sealing cements
The main objectives of any successful endodontic treatment are good cleaning and shaping, and a perfect obturation of the root canal.
Currently, gutta-percha points are most commonly used during the obturation phase. However, this material is not capable of completely sealing the canal on its own. That is why the role of sealing cements is essential; they are responsible for covering the dentin and filling in small irregularities where gutta-percha cannot.
2. Bioceramic cement
Bioceramic cement works in a very similar way to human tissues. They are biocompatible, capable of being reabsorbed and, in addition, stimulate the regeneration of natural tissues.
These particular features allow the dentist to seal small perforations, improve pulp coverage or promote apical regeneration.
3. Repair cement
In recent years, the use of MTA has grown a lot in endodontics. Currently, repair cements incorporate this material that favours bone formation. For this reason, it is primarily used to seal the pathways of communication between the root canal system and the periradicular tissues. Its antibacterial effects make it an ideal product for use in obturation.
The best sealing cements for endodontics
Now that we have talked about the different types of sealing cements and their direct applications in endodontics, it is time to mention the best cements on the market.
Here is our list of essential sealers:
NeoSealer Flo de Avalon Biomed. It is a bioceramic root canal sealer that promotes hydroxyapatite formation to support the healing process. It is a biocompatible, antimicrobial and dimensionally stable product. It has been specifically designed to promote setting and maximise bioactivity.
PDSA EssenSeal. It is a zinc oxide eugenol based sealer cement with Melaleuca essential oil for complex three-dimensional fillings. EssenSeal is highly fluid, allowing easier penetration in the root canal anatomy and achieving a perfect seal. The application of the product provides a perfect coating of the canal walls for a quick and easy insertion of the gutta-percha points.
Dentsply Sirona AH Plus. It is a two-component paste based on epoxy-amine resin, which is used to achieve a permanent seal of the highest quality. Ah Plus is the perfect solution for problems of postoperative sensitivity and chronic apical inflammation. The consistency of the mixture offers an optimal viscosity to work in a cleaner, safer and faster way. It is a highly biocompatible product.
